Should I test for mold myself or call a Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black spots appearing on the back of our bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing the building's exterior. The room has felt more humid lately, and my allergies have been acting up every time I'm in there. Is this something I can test for myself, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai to do a proper mold inspection?

Based on your description, this is a textbook case where I would strongly recommend a professional mold inspection rather than a DIY test. The location (exterior wall) combined with the recent increase in humidity and your allergy symptoms are significant red flags.

While DIY test kits are available in the UAE, they are notoriously unreliable, especially in our unique climate. They typically only identify the presence of mold spores, which are naturally in the air everywhere. The critical data we need is the type and concentration of spores inside versus outside your apartment. This requires professional air sampling pumps, specialized lab analysis, and expert interpretation.

The black spots behind the wardrobe suggest a potential moisture intrusion issue, possibly from a tiny leak in the building envelope or condensation due to the temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot exterior wall—a common issue here in Dubai. A professional inspector won't just test; they will conduct a thorough visual assessment to locate the source of the moisture, which is the real problem that must be fixed.

Given your health symptoms, it's not worth the risk. Improper DIY testing can even disturb the colony and spread spores. For an accurate diagnosis and a clear remediation plan, calling a certified professional is the only safe choice.
