Black mold in bedroom: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It started appearing after that really humid spell we had a couple of weeks ago and it has a really damp, earthy smell. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or should I call a professional company to get it sorted properly?

Thank you for your question. This is a very common issue we see in Dubai, especially after periods of high humidity like we just experienced.

What you're describing—black spots at the wall/ceiling junction with a damp, earthy smell—is highly indicative of active mold growth fueled by a moisture source. The corner is a classic trouble spot due to potential thermal bridging, where the external heat meets the cooled interior air from your AC, creating condensation inside the wall cavity. Bleach is NOT recommended. It is largely ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall as it only bleaches the surface mold without killing the roots, and its high water content can actually feed the problem, causing it to return worse. More critically, improper disturbance can aerosolize harmful mycotoxins.

For a small, isolated patch (less than 1 square meter), a careful DIY approach using a HEPA vacuum and a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide might suffice, but only if you can identify and eliminate the moisture source completely. Given the location (ceiling/wall junction) and the musty odor, this suggests a more systemic issue, likely hidden moisture. This is beyond a surface-level problem.

In the UAE, proper remediation requires isolating the area, using professional-grade HEPA air scrubbers for containment, and specialized antimicrobial agents. We strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact moisture source hidden behind the walls, which is absolutely critical for a permanent solution. Attempting to clean it without solving the root cause is a temporary fix at best.
