Is this black mold in my Dubai bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building. The room always feels a bit damp, even with the AC on constantly. Is this dangerous black mold and what's the best way to get it treated properly in Dubai?

Based on your description, this has a very high probability of being a mold colony. The location—an exterior wall corner in a closet with stored textiles—is a classic hotspot for mold growth in Dubai. The persistent damp feeling, even with AC, is a critical clue. The UAE's high ambient humidity, combined with the temperature differential between a cooled interior and a sun-heated exterior wall, creates significant condensation within the wall cavity. This trapped moisture provides the perfect environment for mold, even if the room surface appears dry.

While the term "black mold" is often misused and causes undue alarm, the presence of any mold in your living space requires attention. The primary concern is not the color but the genus/species and the extent of the infestation. Certain types, like Stachybotrys chartarum, can produce mycotoxins and are more hazardous to health, causing respiratory issues and allergic reactions. Only professional testing can identify the specific type.

Self-treatment with bleach or store-bought solutions is strongly discouraged. It is often ineffective at addressing the root moisture problem and can disturb the spores, aerosolizing them and spreading the contamination throughout your home. The proper protocol involves a three-step process: first, a certified inspection (including moisture mapping and air/surface sampling) to identify the species and moisture source; second, containment and professional remediation by trained technicians using specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial agents; and finally, correction of the underlying moisture issue, which may involve improving insulation, ventilation, or addressing minor leaks.

For a proper assessment and compliant remediation according to Dubai Municipality standards, I recommend contacting a certified professional. You can reach Saniservice, a specialist in mold inspection and remediation, for a consultation at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com.
