How to permanently remove black mold from bathroom grout?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the bathroom tiles in our Marina apartment has started turning black, especially in the corner behind the toilet. It’s been incredibly humid the last couple of weeks and I think that’s what caused it to just appear out of nowhere. I’ve tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just fades a little and comes back darker a few days later.
What’s the most effective product I can find locally to kill this mold for good, and should I be worried about it spreading into the wall?

The black discoloration you're describing in your Marina apartment is classic mold growth, specifically within the porous grout. The high humidity we've been experiencing, combined with residual moisture from showers and the constant cooling/heating cycles of your AC unit, creates the perfect environment for mold spores to thrive. Scrubbing with bleach is a common but ineffective approach; it may bleach the surface color but does not kill the root system (hyphae) penetrating the grout, hence its rapid return.
For a permanent solution, you need a professional-grade, EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner that is designed to penetrate porous materials and destroy the mold at its root. In the UAE, products like RMR-86 or Benefect Botanical Decon 30 are available through major hardware suppliers and are significantly more effective than consumer cleaners. However, their application requires proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and ventilation. The more critical concern is your suspicion of hidden growth. Mold on surface grout is often just the visible indicator of a larger problem within the wall cavity, especially behind fixed fittings like toilets. This is due to chronic condensation and potential micro-leaks from plumbing connections that are common in our climate. Spores can spread through the air system and contaminate other areas. Given the recurrence despite cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the conditions within the wall without destructive demolition. This is crucial to determine if remediation is needed to prevent structural damage and potential health impacts, in full compliance with Dubai Municipality's public health and safety regulations.
