What's the best dehumidifier for a closet in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started getting fuzzy black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. I noticed it a couple of weeks after that really humid spell we had. I run the AC constantly but it’s clearly not enough for that enclosed space. What’s the most effective dehumidifier or moisture absorber I can get to stop this from ruining more of our stuff?

Based on your description of fuzzy black spots on leather goods in an enclosed closet on an exterior wall, you are dealing with a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai villas. The exterior walls, especially in older constructions, can experience thermal bridging, where the heat from outside meets the cooled interior air from your AC, leading to significant condensation within the wall cavity and adjacent spaces like closets. Running the AC constantly lowers ambient humidity but does not address this localized, trapped moisture.

For a confined space like a closet, a compact electric desiccant dehumidifier is the most effective solution. Look for models with a low energy rating and an auto-shutoff humidistat to maintain a relative humidity (RH) level below 60%, which inhibits mold growth. As a stopgap, disposable moisture absorber pods (e.g., silica gel-based) can be used, but they require frequent replacement in Dubai's high humidity climate and are not a long-term fix.

However, the presence of visible mold indicates an established problem. The fuzzy texture suggests active growth that has likely released spores. I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified mold inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact source of the condensation within the wall and moisture meters to assess the extent. Remediation may be required to safely remove the contaminated items and address the root cause to protect your health and property.
