Is mold behind my wardrobe an urgent health risk?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past week and I just found a patch of black and green fuzzy stuff spreading behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived in our Jumeirah Park villa for 2 years and just noticed it, but it must have been growing slowly for a while. With this humidity, how urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I clean it myself this weekend?

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention. The combination of visible black and green mold growth, its concealed location, and the associated health symptoms in your children elevate this from a simple cleaning task to a potential health risk.

The fuzzy texture indicates active growth, and the colors suggest a possible mix of mold types, some of which, like Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold"), can produce mycotoxins. The persistent coughing in your children is a significant red flag and a common reaction to mold spore inhalation. The high humidity inherent to Dubai's climate, especially during summer months, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold. In a villa, issues can be exacerbated by AC systems that may be contributing to condensation or not adequately controlling humidity levels.

Attempting a DIY cleanup is strongly discouraged. Disturbing the colony without proper containment will aerosolize millions of spores, spreading the contamination throughout your home and potentially into the AC system, worsening the air quality and health effects. Effective remediation requires specialized equipment: HEPA filtration units to clean the air, antimicrobial agents to treat the source, and moisture meters to identify and resolve the underlying water issue (likely condensation from the wall or a hidden leak).

For the health of your family, I recommend you contact a certified professional immediately. Saniservice specializes in mold inspection, testing, and remediation in the UAE. Their certified experts can conduct a thorough assessment, identify the species, and safely execute a full containment and removal protocol. You can reach them at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com to schedule an urgent inspection.
