Can I remove AC mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the wall in my kids' bedroom, and now I'm seeing a few small black patches of mold spreading near the floor. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but the musty smell comes back after a day or two. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of condensation-related mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and year-round reliance on air conditioning. The water leakage from the AC unit is providing the constant moisture source that mold requires to thrive.

While wiping the visible patches with vinegar is a common DIY approach, it is insufficient. Vinegar is a surface-level disinfectant and does not address the root cause: the moisture problem. More critically, it does not kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating the porous wall material, nor does it remove the microscopic spores, which is why the smell and growth return so quickly. Using a stronger, bleach-based cleaner is strongly discouraged, as it can release toxic fumes, damage surfaces, and only bleaches the visible color while leaving the organism intact.

For a situation involving an AC leak and recurring growth, a professional assessment is highly recommended. The leak must be repaired by an HVAC technician first to stop the moisture intrusion. Then, a certified mold inspector should assess the extent of the hidden damage. Mold can spread inside wall cavities and the AC ducting itself, which is not visible to the untrained eye. In the UAE, proper remediation follows strict guidelines to contain the affected area and prevent cross-contamination throughout your home.
