Is black mold causing our coughs, need professional removal?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's a pretty big patch, maybe a couple of feet wide, and we’ve had the AC running constantly to fight the humidity. I’m worried it’s making us sick but I don't know if it's something I can tackle with bleach from the supermarket or if I absolutely need to call a professional company to deal with it.

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) behind your wardrobe is contributing to the respiratory irritation and coughing in your children. This species is known for producing mycotoxins that can cause significant health issues, particularly in individuals with allergies, asthma, or compromised immune systems.

The conditions you describe are a textbook case for mold proliferation in Dubai. The constant AC use, while providing relief from the heat, creates a perfect environment for mold if not properly maintained. The cold air from the AC unit causes condensation on warmer surfaces, like exterior walls behind large furniture. This trapped moisture, combined with the region's high ambient humidity, provides the constant dampness mold requires to grow. A patch several feet wide indicates a significant, established colony that has likely been growing unseen for some time.

Using supermarket bleach is strongly discouraged. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface color without killing the roots (hyphae) deep within the material. More critically, bleaching can aggravate the situation by releasing a surge of spores and mycotoxins into your indoor air as you disturb the colony, potentially worsening your family's symptoms.

For a colony of this size and given the associated health symptoms, professional assessment and remediation are absolutely necessary. Our certified inspectors conduct a comprehensive assessment, including moisture mapping to find the water source and air quality testing to determine spore concentration levels. The remediation process involves advanced containment procedures, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and the use of specialized, EPA-approved antimicrobial agents to eliminate the mold at its root. We strongly recommend you call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an immediate inspection to safeguard your family's health.
