Mold in Dubai bedroom: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has felt really damp for the last month, and we’ve started seeing these small black speckles in the corner behind the wardrobe. My husband thinks we can just spray bleach and be done with it, but I’m worried it’s more serious, especially with our baby sleeping in there. Is this a job we can handle ourselves over the weekend, or do we absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

Based on the symptoms you've described—persistent dampness and black speckled growth in a concealed area like behind a wardrobe—this is a situation that warrants a professional mold inspection. The Dubai climate is a primary catalyst; high humidity and constant air conditioning use create significant temperature differentials, leading to condensation in hidden cavities and behind furniture. This provides the perfect environment for mold.

While a surface-level application of bleach might appear to remove the visible staining, it is a temporary and ineffective solution. Bleach does not address the underlying moisture source and is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and plaster, where the mold roots (hyphae) penetrate deeply. Furthermore, the use of bleach can be hazardous, releasing harmful fumes, especially in an occupied bedroom with an infant. Disturbing the colony without proper containment protocols can also cause a widespread release of spores, exacerbating the problem and potentially affecting your HVAC system.

In the UAE, proper remediation follows strict guidelines to protect occupant health and building integrity. A certified inspector will conduct a thorough assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the exact species and the full extent of the infestation, which is often far greater than what is visible. They will then execute a controlled remediation plan involving containment, HEPA filtration, and the use of specialized biocides approved for such use.

For the health of your family and to ensure the problem is resolved at its root, I strongly recommend against a DIY approach.
