Is black mold behind my wardrobe causing kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed it, but I’m worried it’s been there longer, especially with all the humidity from the AC. How urgent is it that I get this professionally removed, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black spots behind the wardrobe and your children's cough are connected. In Dubai's climate, where high external humidity forces us to rely heavily on air conditioning, condensation is a common issue, particularly behind large furniture pieces placed against exterior walls. This creates a persistent damp microenvironment, which is the primary condition for mold growth, including species like Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold") or Aspergillus niger.
The mycotoxins and spores released by these colonies are potent respiratory irritants and allergens. Children are particularly susceptible due to their developing immune systems and smaller lung capacity, often presenting with persistent coughing, wheezing, or nasal congestion as the first symptoms. Attempting remediation yourself with a solution like vinegar is strongly discouraged. Disturbing the colony without proper containment will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially exacerbating your children's symptoms and contaminating other areas of your home. DIY methods also fail to address the root cause—the hidden moisture source, which could be a slight condensation issue or something more serious like a minor plumbing leak within the wall. This situation warrants a professional inspection. Our certified team uses moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air/surface sampling to identify the exact species and the full extent of the infestation, including inside the wall cavity. Remediation involves engineering controls like negative air pressure and HEPA filtration to safely remove the biomass and apply specialized antimicrobial agents. We then identify and rectify the moisture source to prevent recurrence. For the health of your family, I recommend immediate action.
