Should I clean bedroom mold myself or call building management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately in Dubai, it seems to have gotten worse. I'm worried it's spreading. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, or should I call my building management first?

Based on the description of your situation—a patch of black mold on an exterior wall that has worsened with the recent high humidity—this is a matter that requires a professional assessment. In Dubai's climate, where high outdoor humidity combines with constant air conditioning, condensation on cold exterior walls is a primary cause of mold growth. The location behind boxes suggests a severe lack of airflow, exacerbating the problem.

While small surface mold on non-porous materials can sometimes be addressed with a dilute bleach solution, your case has several red flags. The mold is on a building material (drywall or plaster), it is black in color (which can indicate more problematic species like Stachybotrys), and its location on an exterior wall points to a potential underlying moisture issue that simple cleaning will not resolve. The mold you see is likely just the surface manifestation of a larger colony within the wall cavity.

Your first call should be to your building management or landlord. According to typical tenancy agreements in the UAE, they are responsible for the structural integrity of the building and addressing moisture ingress issues from the outside, such as faulty external waterproofing or leaking pipes within the walls. They should send their maintenance team to investigate the source of the moisture.

However, for the actual mold inspection, testing, and safe remediation, you require a certified professional. We use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture and mold growth within walls, followed by controlled remediation to prevent cross-contamination. Attempting to clean it yourself risks inadequate removal and spreading spores throughout your bedroom.

For a comprehensive inspection to determine the root cause and extent of the problem, I strongly recommend contacting our team at Saniservice. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a detailed assessment and a remediation plan that complies with Dubai Municipality guidelines.
