Black mold in bedroom closet: call landlord or cleaner?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried the recent humidity has made it worse. What's the best way to get rid of this safely and should I be calling my landlord first or a professional cleaning company?

Based on the description of a black mold patch on an exterior wall, this is a situation that warrants immediate attention. In Dubai's climate, where high external humidity meets year-round air conditioning, this is a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth. The temperature differential between the cool interior wall and the humid outdoor air creates a perfect environment for mold, especially in a confined, low-airflow space like a closet.

Your first step should absolutely be to notify your landlord in writing, as per standard UAE tenancy agreements. The landlord is typically responsible for addressing structural issues that lead to dampness and mold, such as potential insulation faults or leaks in the building envelope. Do not attempt a DIY cleaning with bleach, as this can release harmful spores and only addresses the surface discoloration, not the underlying moisture problem.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. A certified mold inspector can conduct moisture mapping and thermal imaging to identify the exact source of the moisture intrusion and assess the extent of the growth, which may not be visible. They will provide a detailed protocol for safe remediation, which protects your health and your belongings.

For a thorough inspection and certified remediation that addresses the root cause, I recommend contacting our specialists at Saniservice. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We can assess the situation and liaise with your landlord to ensure the issue is resolved correctly and permanently.
