How to remove closet mold and stop mositure for good?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Springs for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the outer wall. It seems worse after we run the AC, and I'm worried it's spreading behind the clothes. What's the best way to clean this safely and, more importantly, how can we stop the moisture from coming back for good?

That black mold in your closet is a classic sign of condensation forming on a cold outer wall, a very common issue in Dubai villas. The AC chills that wall, and the high humidity condenses on it, creating the perfect damp environment for mold.
For a small patch, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, then wipe it down with a damp cloth and let it dry completely. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and doesn't kill the roots. Discard any porous items like cardboard boxes that are contaminated. Stopping it from returning is the critical part. The moisture is from condensation, not a leak. You must break the cycle of the cold wall meeting humid air. First, move all clothing and stored items at least six inches away from the outer wall to improve air circulation. A small dehumidifier or moisture absorber placed inside the closet can make a significant difference. Ensure your AC is not set excessively low, as a greater temperature differential causes more condensation. For a permanent solution, the underlying issue of the cold wall needs to be addressed. This often requires a professional inspection to diagnose the root cause. The solution could involve improving the wall's insulation, addressing thermal bridging, or adjusting your HVAC system's balance and humidity control. In many UAE villas, this is a building envelope issue that needs expert assessment to resolve permanently. |
