Found black mold in bedroom; DIY or call pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried the spores are getting into the AC. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call a professional company in Dubai right away?

First, identify the source of the moisture. In Dubai's high humidity, this is often condensation from an AC duct running through the wall or a small, hidden leak. Check for musty odours and any dampness on the wall or floor. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt to clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves.
However, if the mold returns quickly, the source hasn't been addressed. Given its location near the AC, there is a risk spores could be circulated. For any persistent mold, or if the area is larger, a professional inspection is recommended to locate the exact moisture source and assess the extent. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside walls. Many companies in Dubai offer free visual inspections. A reputable one will provide a clear scope of work and may suggest air or surface sampling from their own lab to identify the species, which determines the remediation protocol. DIY is often a temporary fix if the underlying cause, like a leaking pipe or inadequate insulation causing condensation, isn't professionally resolved. |
