How to treat and prevent wardrobe mold in humid bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in the Discovery Gardens apartment has been feeling really humid lately. We keep the AC on, but I just found a bunch of black speckles in the back of the wardrobe where we store our winter clothes. I'm worried it's spreading and ruining our stuff. What's the best way to treat this and stop it from coming back for good?

Wardrobe mold in humid bedrooms is a very common issue in Dubai, especially in areas like Discovery Gardens. The black speckles are likely mold growth, fueled by the high humidity and condensation that occurs when warm, moisture-laden air meets cooler surfaces, like a closet on an exterior wall.

First, address the immediate problem. Remove all affected items and wash or dry-clean them. For the wardrobe itself, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be used to wipe down the surfaces. Ensure the area is well-ventilated during cleaning. Do not simply paint over it, as the mold will regrow.

To stop it from coming back, you must control the humidity. Your AC is key, but it needs to run consistently and be set to a sufficiently low temperature, ideally 22-24°C, to effectively dehumidify the air. Ensure the bedroom door is kept open to allow air circulation into the wardrobe. For closets, use moisture absorbers like silica gel packs and avoid overpacking clothes, as this restricts airflow.

For a more permanent solution, consider a professional inspection. The humidity may be due to a poorly sealed window, an AC unit not draining correctly, or inadequate room ventilation. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to pinpoint the source and assess if the mold has spread into the wall cavity. In many cases, a standalone dehumidifier for the bedroom is the most effective way to maintain a safe humidity level (below 60%) year-round, preventing recurrence.
