Is closet mold urgent to treat or DIY with vinegar?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. I’m worried it might be affecting our clothes and health.
How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray?

Closet mold on an interior wall is a sign of trapped humidity and should be addressed promptly. The recent spike in humidity creates a perfect breeding ground, and the porous materials in a closet (drywall, wood, fabric) allow it to spread.
For a small, surface-level area (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be attempted. A solution of distilled white vinegar can kill many surface mold types. However, it will not address the root cause—the moisture source. In Dubai’s climate, this is often condensation from an AC unit’s cold air hitting a warmer wall or a minor, hidden plumbing leak. The urgency for professional assessment is high if the spots are spreading, the area is larger than a square foot, or you notice a musty odor on your clothes. This indicates active growth within the wall cavity, which vinegar cannot reach. Disturbing it yourself can inadvertently release a large number of spores into your living space. Professionals use containment procedures and industrial-grade HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination during remediation. Ultimately, the treatment is less critical than the diagnosis. Identifying and correcting the moisture source is the only permanent solution. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the condensation point or leak, which is often not where the mold is visible. For health safety and to prevent structural damage to the property, a professional inspection is strongly recommended in this scenario. |
