Can I remove Dubai villa mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our wardrobe. It's been super humid lately and I'm worried it's mold. Is this something I can tackle myself with vinegar and bleach, or should I just call one of those professional mold removal companies here in Dubai?

It depends on the extent and type. For a small, surface-level patch (less than 1 square meter), you can attempt a DIY approach. However, the location behind a wardrobe in a humid Jumeirah villa suggests a persistent moisture issue, which is a primary concern.

For DIY, use a detergent solution, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and can worsen the problem by adding moisture. Vinegar can be effective on non-porous surfaces but may not penetrate deep into plaster or drywall. Scrubbing visible mold without identifying and resolving the moisture source is a temporary fix. In Dubai's climate, the high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold to return quickly if the underlying cause isn't addressed.

You should call a professional if the area is larger than 1 square meter, if there's a musty odor, or if you suspect the mold has spread inside the wall cavity. A pro will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of water—often condensation from AC ducts, a plumbing leak, or rising damp—and then perform remediation with industrial HEPA air scrubbers to contain spores. For severe cases, only a Dubai Municipality-approved remediation company can provide the necessary clearance testing and certification to confirm the environment is safely restored.
