Black mold in Dubai villa: who to call for testing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop since we came back from the summer holidays, and I just found a patch of black, fuzzy stuff behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. Our villa in Al Barsha seems to hold a lot of humidity, especially with the AC running all the time. Is this definitely black mold and who should I call to get it professionally tested and removed in Dubai?

The patch you describe is very likely mold, given Dubai's high humidity and the condensation that builds up behind furniture on cold exterior walls. While 'black mold' is a common term, many species appear black; only a lab culture can confirm if it's Stachybotrys, the type most associated with health risks.
For professional testing in Dubai, you should call a certified mold inspection company with its own microbiology lab. This is critical, as many cleaning companies will offer to 'test' but only perform visual inspections. A legitimate inspector will use calibrated equipment to measure spore counts throughout your villa and take physical samples for species identification. This data is the only way to assess the actual risk to your children and create a targeted remediation plan. Look for companies whose technicians hold certifications like IICRC. For removal, the same company should be able to provide remediation services, but ensure the testing and remediation divisions are separate to avoid a conflict of interest. The process involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and physically removing the contaminated materials. Simply spraying or painting over it is ineffective. The high humidity in your villa, exacerbated by constant AC use creating cold surfaces, means the underlying moisture issue must also be addressed, often with a dehumidification strategy, to prevent immediate recurrence. |
