Can I clean black wardrobe mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My wardrobe in the master bedroom has these black speckles in the corners, and my clothes have started to smell a bit damp even though the AC is always on. It’s been getting worse since the humidity really spiked a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can clean myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional company to look at it?

Black speckles and a damp smell in your wardrobe are classic signs of a mold issue, common in Dubai's high humidity when warm, stagnant air meets cold surfaces from constant AC use, causing condensation.

For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Use a vinegar solution (1 part white vinegar to 1 part water) or a specialized mold-cleaning product, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface color and doesn't kill the roots on porous surfaces like wood; it can also worsen indoor air quality. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and address the moisture source by ensuring the room is well-ventilated and the AC is not set too cold, which causes more condensation.

However, if the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated the wood, keeps returning after cleaning, or you notice the musty smell has spread, it indicates a deeper problem. In these cases, a professional inspection is needed to identify the hidden moisture source—which could be a small leak, rising damp, or an AC drain issue—and to assess the full extent. Improper cleaning can aerosolize spores and spread the problem. A reputable company can provide lab analysis to identify the mold type and a protocol for safe, effective remediation, which is crucial for health, especially if you have allergies or respiratory sensitivities.
