How to treat and prevent closet mold without a window?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom’s walk-in closet has developed black spots along the back wall, and all our leather shoes and bags stored there have started getting a fuzzy white coating. I think it started after the humidity really spiked a couple of months ago, but we only just cleared out the clutter and saw the full extent. What’s the most effective way to treat the wall and protect our belongings from this recurring, especially since we don’t have a window in there?

The black spots on the wall and fuzzy white coating on leather are classic signs of a mold problem, directly fueled by Dubai's high humidity and lack of air circulation in the enclosed closet. The leather items are likely developing mildew, a surface mold that thrives in the same damp, stagnant conditions.
First, address the active growth on the wall. For a small area, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective for cleaning non-porous surfaces. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. However, if the mold has penetrated the drywall or the affected area is larger than one square meter, the wall may need to be cut out and replaced by a professional to prevent it from returning internally. For your leather goods, wipe them down with a dilute vinegar solution or a leather-safe disinfectant and allow them to dry completely in a well-ventilated area before considering returning them to the closet. Prevention is critical since there's no window. The core issue is humidity and stagnant air. Run a small, portable dehumidifier inside the closet continuously, emptying it regularly. Alternatively, a rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier can help absorb moisture. Ensure the closet door is left open as often as possible to allow conditioned air from your bedroom to circulate. If there’s an AC vent in the bedroom, ensure it is not blocked and that cool air can flow into the closet space. For a permanent solution and to rule out a more serious infestation behind the walls, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is recommended. They can identify the exact moisture source and ensure the remediation is done to Dubai Municipality standards, preventing recurrence. |
