How to remove black mold in Dubai villa closet safely?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom walk-in closet. It's on the wall behind the shoe racks and I'm worried it's been spreading slowly for a while, especially with all the humidity we've had lately. What's the most effective and safe way to remove this myself before it gets worse, or should I call a professional company right away?

For small patches (under 1 square meter), you can attempt removal yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part household bleach to four parts water. Scrub the affected area vigorously, then dry it completely with a fan. The key is not just cleaning but eliminating the moisture source—in a Dubai closet, this is often condensation from an exterior wall or high humidity.

Given the UAE's high humidity and your villa's location, a hidden moisture issue behind the wall is likely. If the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or has a musty odor, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the root cause, which DIY methods cannot. For health safety, especially with black mold, lab identification of the species is advised to understand the actual risk.

Effective remediation in this climate requires fixing the ventilation or insulation problem first, otherwise, the mold will recur regardless of how well you clean.
