DIY mold removal or professional for Jumeirah villa closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It must have been growing slowly for a while because our winter clothes in there have a really strong, damp smell. We run the AC constantly but it’s a pretty tight, enclosed space. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from ACE Hardware, or should I call in a professional mold remediation company, and if so, what’s a rough cost I should expect for a job like this?

Black mold in a Jumeirah villa closet is a common issue here, driven by Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use causing condensation on cold interior walls. For a large patch that has already affected fabrics, DIY is not recommended. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and only bleaches the surface, leaving the root structure intact. It also fails to address the moisture source.
A professional inspection is advised to identify the extent of the growth and the underlying cause, which is likely a combination of poor air circulation and a cold spot on the wall. Remediation involves containment to prevent spores from spreading, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment, and often replacing the affected drywall and insulation. For a closet of that size, the scope is manageable but requires proper methodology. The cost is variable, dependent on the penetration into the wall and the required containment. You can expect a professional assessment to be the first step, which will define the scope and associated investment. Always verify the company's methodology and ask for proof of certification, such as IICRC, to ensure they follow global standards for remediation. |
