Can I remove black mould myself or need a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mould in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading behind the walls. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mould inspection service in Dubai?

A small patch of black mould on a visible surface can often be cleaned by a homeowner. However, given its location in a closet, the recent high humidity, and your concern about it spreading behind walls, a professional inspection is strongly recommended for this scenario.

In Dubai's climate, mould growth inside walls is a common issue, often driven by condensation from AC systems or minor, undetected leaks. Bleach is not a recommended solution; it only removes surface discoloration but does not address the moisture source or kill the mould roots, and its fumes can be hazardous indoors. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden humidity source that is feeding the growth. Without eliminating that source, the mould will almost certainly return, even after cleaning.

For a situation like this, the priority is diagnosis, not just removal. A certified inspector can identify the exact species (as not all black mould is the highly toxic Stachybotrys) and map the full extent of the problem, including inside the wall cavity. This prevents unnecessary demolition and ensures the remediation is targeted and effective. You can proceed with a DIY clean on a small, surface-level patch using a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, but given your specific concerns, an assessment would provide peace of mind and a scientific basis for any next steps.
