How to treat and prevent mold on leather in humid closets?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started getting small black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there after the humidity last week. I’m worried it’s mold and it’s going to ruin everything, even though we run the AC constantly. What’s the most effective way to treat the items already affected and what can I do to stop this from happening again every time the weather changes?

That sounds like a classic case of surface mold, a common issue in Jumeirah villas due to the high ambient humidity, even with AC running. The closet is likely a microclimate where stagnant, humid air gets trapped, allowing condensation to form on cooler surfaces like leather.

For the affected items, take them outside immediately to prevent spores from spreading indoors. Gently wipe the mold off the leather using a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn spots, use a cloth slightly dampened with a 50/50 solution of water and isopropyl alcohol or a leather-safe disinfectant, then wipe dry. Never use bleach or excessive water, as it can damage the leather. Allow the items to air dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area—never in direct sunlight, which can cause cracking. Once dry, treat them with a quality leather conditioner.

To prevent recurrence, you must address the closet's environment. The goal is to reduce humidity and increase air circulation. Start by thoroughly cleaning the empty closet with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution to kill any remaining spores. Install a battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber like silica gel packs inside the closet. Leave some space between the wall and your stored items. Most importantly, improve air flow; if the closet has vents, ensure they are clear. For closets without ventilation, leaving the door ajar for a few hours each day can make a significant difference.

If the mold growth is extensive, has penetrated deeply into the items, or you notice a musty odor permeating the room, a professional inspection is advised. They can identify the moisture source and the mold species, which is crucial for ensuring it's not a more persistent type that could affect your home's air quality.
