AC mold smell and spots: DIY clean or call pros?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell, and now I’m seeing small black spots around the vent in the bedroom. It’s gotten worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can clean myself with a vinegar solution, or is it time to call one of those professional mold remediation companies?

The damp smell and black spots are classic signs of condensation-related mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use. Vinegar can tackle minor surface mold on non-porous areas, but it's often a temporary fix for AC systems.
For the vent cover, you can remove it, scrub with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, and let it dry completely. However, if the mold is inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils—which the smell suggests it likely is—a DIY approach cannot reach the source. The moisture inside the unit will cause it to return quickly. Given the visible growth and persistent odor, a professional inspection is advised. In Dubai, mold remediation companies should identify the root cause, typically excess moisture from a clogged drain line or dirty coils. Reputable providers use methods like video scoping and should recommend air or surface sampling to identify the mold type, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. This is crucial for ensuring the issue is resolved and not just masked. |
