Found black mold in closet, who to call first?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. I think it might be because the closet is on the same wall as the bathroom and maybe there's a hidden leak. What's the most effective way to get rid of it for good and who should I call first, a mold specialist or a handyman to check for leaks?

Call a leak detection specialist or a competent handyman first to inspect the bathroom plumbing and wall for moisture. Mold is a symptom of a water problem; the leak must be identified and fixed before any cleaning begins. If the wall is shared with a bathroom, a leaking pipe, failed sealant, or condensation from cold water lines are common culprits.

Once the leak is repaired and the wall is dry, you can address the mold. For a small, surface-level patch, a thorough cleaning with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner can be effective. However, if the mold has penetrated the drywall or plaster, the affected section will likely need to be cut out and replaced by a contractor to prevent spores from remaining inside the wall cavity.

Involve a professional mold inspection company if the area is larger than one square meter, if you smell a persistent musty odor, or if household members experience unexplained allergies or respiratory issues. A proper inspection includes moisture mapping and, if necessary, lab analysis to identify the mold type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. In Dubai’s high humidity, simply wiping mold away without solving the underlying moisture issue guarantees it will return.
