DIY fix or professional for Jumeirah Village Circle mold?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit, and now I’ve found a patch of black mold, about the size of a dinner plate, behind the bedroom wardrobe. It’s been there for maybe a month but seems to be spreading. I’m worried about my family’s health and the damage to the wall. For a problem this size, is it worth trying a DIY fix with bleach, or should I just call a professional mold removal company in Dubai and what would that typically cost?

For a patch the size of a dinner plate that is actively spreading, a professional assessment is strongly advised. The primary concern is that the visible mold is likely just the surface manifestation; the real problem is the moisture trapped inside your wall from the AC leak, which will continue to fuel growth even if you clean the surface.

Bleach is not recommended. It can lighten the stain but often fails to kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like drywall and grout. More critically, it does not address the moisture source. In Dubai’s high humidity, the mold will almost certainly return. Scrubbing it yourself can also aerosolize spores, potentially spreading the contamination to other areas of your apartment.

A proper remediation process involves identifying and repairing the AC leak—the critical first step. The affected section of drywall often needs to be carefully removed and disposed of to eliminate the contaminated material. The area is then HEPA-vacuumed, treated with EPA-approved antimicrobials, and sealed. Air scrubbing equipment is used to contain spores during the process.

Given the ongoing leak and spread, the cost for professional remediation will be on the higher side, as it involves both leak repair and wall restoration. For an accurate assessment and quote, you should request an on-site inspection from a company that can provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the space is safe. This is a common standard for reputable providers in the UAE.
