Black bathroom grout and smell: professional fix cost in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Discovery Gardens apartment for 2 years and just noticed the grout between the floor tiles in the master bathroom has turned completely black, and there's a persistent damp smell. It’s definitely gotten worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago. I tried a bleach spray but it only lightened it for a day before it came back. Is this a job for a professional, and what’s the typical cost in Dubai to get this properly fixed?

Black grout returning after a bleach clean indicates a deeper mold colony within the porous material and possibly behind the tiles. In Dubai's high humidity, especially in bathrooms with year-round AC use creating condensation, surface cleaning is a temporary fix.

For a persistent problem in an apartment, a professional assessment is needed to determine the moisture source and extent. Remediation typically involves removing the affected grout, applying a specialized antimicrobial treatment to the substrate, and regrouting with a mold-inhibiting product. The cost for this service is variable, as it depends entirely on the bathroom's size and the infestation's severity. For an accurate estimate, you will need an on-site inspection.

To manage the issue proactively, ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is functional and run it during and for 30 minutes after showers. Wiping down wet surfaces and using a dehumidifier can also help reduce the ambient moisture that mold thrives on.
