Black mold in Jumeirah guest room: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bedroom in Jumeirah, which we barely use, always feels damp and I just found black spots spreading behind the wardrobe. It’s been like this since the humidity really kicked in a couple of months ago. I’m worried about the cost of getting it professionally treated versus trying to clean it myself with bleach—is this a job for a professional company, and what’s a rough estimate for a small room?

That black spotting behind the wardrobe is a classic sign of condensation mold, a very common issue in Jumeirah due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating cold surfaces where moisture condenses. Because it’s spreading and located behind furniture, this isn't a surface-level issue you can simply wipe away.

DIY cleaning with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes the visible colour on non-porous surfaces but does not kill the root structure (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like drywall or plaster. It can also exacerbate the problem by adding moisture. For a small, contained area, the remediation process involves isolating the space, physically removing contaminated porous materials, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth.

The critical first step is a professional inspection to determine the moisture source and the extent of the damage hidden within the wall. The cost for a single room remediation can vary significantly, as it's not based on room size alone but the square footage of affected surface area and the required containment level. You should request an on-site assessment from a company with microbial lab capabilities to get an accurate scope of work and quotation.
