Should I be worried about mold in my closet?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell in the corner of my bedroom closet. My landlord says it’s his responsibility to test for mold, but I’m not sure if that's correct. Given that we've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, should I be concerned about my health or is he right about it being his duty?

Absolutely, it's understandable to be concerned about mold in your closet after noticing the musty smell. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, humidity levels can be quite high, especially following rainy periods, which indeed create favorable conditions for mold growth. Your observation is a clear sign that you should not ignore this issue.

Mold testing and remediation are governed by specific guidelines to ensure public health and building safety. According to the UAE's Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), it's crucial to adhere to standards set out in EN 475-1:2018 for moisture content assessment, which indirectly affects mold growth conditions.

Given that you've noticed the smell after two years in your apartment, it’s highly recommended to have a professional inspection. While landlords are responsible for maintaining buildings and ensuring their habitability, they may not always address latent issues promptly, especially if tenants haven't reported them. The UAE does not specifically mandate regular mold testing, but it's wise to ensure the living environment is safe.

A certified environmental inspector or hygienist can perform a comprehensive assessment using advanced methods such as air sampling, surface swabbing, and moisture meter tests. These tools help identify the presence of harmful molds like Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold), Aspergillus, and Penicillium, which are known to cause respiratory issues.

If mold is detected, remediation strategies must be implemented swiftly. This may involve removing contaminated materials, treating surfaces with biocides, and addressing the source of moisture. It’s also important to note that preventing future outbreaks involves maintaining proper ventilation and controlling humidity levels in your home through dehumidifiers or air conditioning units.

Should you decide to seek professional help, consider contacting companies like Saniservice, known for their expertise in mold remediation across Dubai. They can provide a thorough evaluation and develop a tailored plan based on the specific conditions of your property. Their contact details are: Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.

Remember, addressing mold early prevents potential health risks including allergies, asthma exacerbation, and other respiratory problems. Stay proactive about your indoor environment to maintain a healthy living space.
