AC mold and gurgling noise: first step to clean safely?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom’s AC unit has been making a weird gurgling noise for a couple of weeks, and now I’ve just pulled back the corner of the carpet near the wall and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold about the size of my hand. It’s in our villa in Jumeirah, and the humidity has been brutal lately. What’s the first step I should take to deal with this safely, and should I get my AC serviced first before cleaning it?

Your first step is to stop using that AC unit immediately. The gurgling noise is a classic sign of a clogged condensate drain line, which is causing water to back up and seep into your wall and carpet, creating the perfect damp environment for that mold. In Dubai's high humidity, this is a very common issue.
For your safety, do not attempt to clean the mold yourself, especially as it's already a sizable patch. Disturbing it can release a large number of spores into the air. Isolate the area if possible by closing the door to the room. The AC service and mold remediation are directly linked and must be handled together. You need a two-part professional assessment: an HVAC technician to clear the drain line, repair any issues, and restore proper drainage, followed by a mold inspection to determine the full extent of the growth behind the wall and under the carpet. A proper inspection, often involving moisture meters and sometimes a lab analysis of the mold type, is critical to create an effective remediation plan. Simply cleaning the visible patch without fixing the AC and addressing the hidden moisture will result in it returning very quickly. |
