How to safely remove black mold and who to notify?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I finally discovered a patch of black mold behind the toilet in our master bathroom. It's been super humid lately and our bathroom window doesn't open, so I guess the moisture never escapes. I'm worried about their health and the damage to the apartment.
What's the best way to safely clean this myself, and who should I notify in my building in Jumeirah Lakes Towers?

Clean small patches (under one square foot) with a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water, or a diluted bleach solution. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer, means moisture control is the real fix; run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower.
For your children's coughing, a patch behind a toilet is a likely irritant but a professional inspection can identify if spores have spread into the AC system or walls, which is common when humidity is trapped in sealed apartments. Notify your JLT building management or owner immediately. They are responsible for investigating and fixing the source of the moisture, which could be a hidden plumbing leak or inadequate ventilation, as per Dubai's common tenancy laws. If the mold covers a larger area or returns after cleaning, a certified mold assessment with lab analysis is needed to identify the species and full extent. |
