How to permanently remove black mold behind bedroom wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a line of black, fuzzy mold creeping along the bottom of our bedroom wall behind the wardrobe. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our building in JVC, and it’s gotten much worse since last week's heavy dew. What's the most effective way to get rid of this for good, and should I be worried about my health?

The black mold behind your wardrobe is likely caused by condensation forming on the cold exterior wall, especially with the recent high humidity and dew. This is a common issue in Dubai's climate where cold AC walls meet warm, moist air.

For a permanent solution, simply wiping it away isn't enough. You must address the moisture source. Start by moving the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation. The wall needs to be thoroughly cleaned with a solution of detergent and water; avoid bleach as it only removes the color and not the root structure. After cleaning, the area must be completely dried.

The core issue is the temperature differential causing condensation. To prevent recurrence, consider improving the room's insulation or using a dehumidifier to manage moisture levels, particularly during more humid periods.

Given the mold's location and rapid growth, a professional inspection is highly recommended. They can identify if there's a more serious hidden moisture problem within the wall cavity itself. Persistent wall mold can release spores that may cause nasal congestion, throat irritation, or coughing, especially for those with allergies or asthma. A certified inspector can perform surface sampling to identify the mold type and assess the air quality, providing a clear remediation plan to resolve it for good.
