How to prevent mold in a humid bedroom long-term?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be linked to the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an interior wall facing the hallway. We’ve lived in this Discovery Gardens apartment for 2 years and just noticed this, especially since the weather has been so humid lately. I’m worried it’s spreading where we can’t see it. Besides cleaning the visible mold, what’s the most effective long-term solution to control the humidity in the room and prevent it from coming back?

Black mold growth behind furniture on interior walls in Discovery Gardens is a classic sign of condensation due to high humidity and lack of air circulation. The recent humid weather exacerbates this. The coughing could be a reaction to the spores; proper identification through a lab test is the only way to confirm the type and associated health risks.

The long-term solution is controlling the room's moisture. Start by moving the wardrobe at least two inches away from the wall to allow air to circulate behind it. Consistently run your AC, as its primary job in our climate is dehumidification. Keep the bedroom door open to allow conditioned air to flow evenly throughout the apartment. For added control, use a standalone dehumidifier, especially at night, aiming to maintain humidity levels below 60%.

For serious, recurring issues, a professional inspection is key to identify hidden growth within wall cavities or under flooring, which is common in such cases. They can assess if the problem stems from a internal leak or insufficient insulation. Remediation must address the root cause, not just the visible spots, to prevent it from returning.
