Black mold in shower grout: DIY fix or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in our JBR apartment's master bathroom shower has started turning black over the last few weeks. It's spreading and now there's a really strong, damp smell that fills the whole room, even though we run the exhaust fan. What's the most effective way to treat this myself, or should I immediately call the building management to handle it?

Black mold in shower grout is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant condensation from hot showers. The strong, spreading smell indicates a significant growth that surface cleaning won't fix.
For a DIY attempt, first try scrubbing with a dedicated grout brush and a paste of baking soda and vinegar or a hydrogen peroxide solution. This can remove surface stains. However, if the mold has penetrated deep into the porous grout or if the smell persists after a thorough clean, the growth is likely behind the tiles. In this case, scraping out and re-grouting is the only permanent solution, which is a skilled job to prevent water ingress. Given the rapid spread and pervasive odor in your JBR apartment, this is likely a serious case. The issue may stem from a leak in the plumbing behind the wall or inadequate sealing, which is a structural concern. You should immediately report this to your building management. Under Dubai's rental regulations, the owner is typically responsible for fixing structural defects and issues related to building integrity, which includes hidden water leaks that cause mold. They should send a professional to conduct a proper inspection, identify the moisture source, and perform the remediation correctly to prevent recurrence. While waiting, ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is working properly and run it during and for at least 30 minutes after showers. A dehumidifier can also help manage the ambient moisture. |
