Is the mold in my house making my toddler sick?« Back to Previous Page

Our toddler has been having a persistent cough and runny nose for the last couple of weeks, and we can't figure out why. I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes from the storage cupboard under our stairs in Jumeirah and found a bunch of our jackets with black fuzzy spots on them, and the whole space smells damp. I'm really worried the mold might be what's making my son sick. What's the best way to get a proper mold inspection done to see how bad it is?

Mold exposure can definitely cause the symptoms you're describing in your toddler. The persistent cough and runny nose are classic signs of mold irritation, particularly in young children who are more sensitive to airborne particles. The damp, confined storage space you found is a common source in Dubai, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth in poorly ventilated areas.

For a situation involving a child's health and visible mold growth, a professional inspection is the most reliable path. A proper inspection involves more than a visual check; it includes moisture mapping to find the water source and air or surface sampling to identify the mold species. This is crucial because some types, like Aspergillus, are more problematic than others. The inspector should provide a detailed report with the findings and a clear remediation plan.

In the UAE, look for a company that follows international standards like the IICRC S520 and can provide documented lab results from the analysis. While you wait for the inspection, keep the storage area closed off from the rest of the house and consider using a dehumidifier in adjacent spaces to help reduce the overall moisture level.
