Black mold in AC causing our coughs in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop and my own allergies have been awful for the last couple of months, and I think it's our AC unit. I just pulled the filter out in our Jumeirah apartment and found black, fuzzy spots all over the inside of the vent. Could this be causing our respiratory issues, and who should I even call to get it professionally cleaned and tested here?

The black, fuzzy growth you've found is very likely a significant contributor to your family's persistent coughs and allergy symptoms. In Dubai's climate, where air conditioners run constantly and create condensation, mold finds an ideal environment to grow inside ducts and on cooling coils, then circulates spores throughout your apartment.

For a Jumeirah apartment, the immediate step is to call a professional indoor environmental company for an inspection and comprehensive cleaning. Do not attempt to clean active mold growth yourself, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. A proper remediation involves containing the area, using HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment of the entire duct system, not just the visible spots near the vent.

Crucially, the cleaning should be verified with testing. Reputable providers use third-party, accredited microbiology labs to analyze air or surface samples, providing a documented before-and-after report. This is the only way to confirm the species (some types like Aspergillus are more irritating) and ensure the job was done effectively. Ask any company you contact if they provide this verifiable proof of remediation. This process is the standard for addressing health-related mold issues in UAE homes.
