Black mold on wardrobe: DIY bleach or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black speckles growing on the back of our wardrobe in the master bedroom. The room has a weird, damp smell and it's right against the exterior wall in our villa in Mirdif. I’m worried it’s spreading but have no idea what this kind of remediation costs here. Is this a DIY job with bleach or should I just call a professional company to get it sorted properly?

Black mold on a wardrobe against an exterior wall in Mirdif is a common issue driven by the UAE's high humidity and temperature differentials. The wall is likely a cold surface where condensation forms, providing the constant moisture mold needs to thrive. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like wood; it only removes surface discoloration while the hyphae (roots) remain and regrow.
This is not typically a DIY job. The priority is identifying and stopping the moisture source, which often requires professional diagnostic tools like thermal imaging to find hidden condensation points within the wall cavity. Spores are likely already airborne, which is the cause of the musty smell and potential for spreading. For a proper remediation, the affected section of the wardrobe and possibly the wall behind it must be isolated, removed, and the area treated with specialized antimicrobial agents. The cost for a professional assessment and remediation is variable; it depends entirely on the extent of the hidden growth within the wall. The only way to get an accurate understanding of the scope and cost is to request an on-site inspection from a company that can provide a detailed, lab-supported remediation plan. |
