Can I fix recurring bathroom mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black and green spots spreading in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom. It's worst in the corner behind the toilet where it's always a bit damp. I tried scrubbing it with bleach but it came back after a couple of weeks. Is this something I can fix myself with a better product, or do I need to call a professional cleaner for it?

Recurring bathroom mold is very common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from daily showers and year-round AC use. The damp area behind your toilet is a classic breeding ground. If bleach only provided a temporary fix, the mold has likely penetrated deep into the porous grout, where surface cleaners can't reach.

For a small, contained area, you can try a two-step process. First, apply a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner (not just bleach) and let it soak according to the label. Scrubbing alone is often insufficient. After treatment, the most critical step is addressing the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it's actually venting properly. Wipe down wet walls and grout lines with a squeegee after use. A small dehumidifier can also help measurably reduce ambient humidity.

If the mold returns quickly despite these measures, or if the affected area is larger than one square meter, the growth is likely more extensive than visible on the surface. In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the root cause, such as a hidden plumbing leak or compromised grout sealant, and to perform remediation that removes the mold at its source rather than just bleaching the surface color.
