Urgent to hire pro for closet mold, or use bleach?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Mirdif villa has been smelling really damp for the past couple of weeks. I finally pulled everything out today and found a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading on the back wall and on a few of my leather bags. With this humidity coming back, how urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Black fuzzy growth on a wall and leather in a Mirdif villa is a sign of an active moisture problem that needs immediate attention. Given Dubai's high humidity, this is urgent. The wall likely has condensation or a hidden leak, and the mold is feeding on the organic material in the wall and your bags.
Do not use bleach. It is mostly water, which feeds the mold, and its surface-level bleaching effect masks the problem without addressing the root cause or the hyphae (roots) growing into porous surfaces like drywall. For your health, disturbing it without proper containment can aerosolize spores throughout your bedroom. This requires a professional assessment. The wall must be inspected for the moisture source—it could be condensation from AC ducting running through the space, a leak from an adjacent bathroom, or capillary rise from the foundation. The remediation process involves isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials (like the affected drywall section and potentially the bags), and using specialized antimicrobials on the frame. Simply wiping the surface will fail. For context, Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on mold and dampness in dwellings due to its impact on indoor air quality. A proper inspection will identify the species and the extent, which is critical for a correct remediation plan. Handling this yourself risks inadequate removal and continued health exposure. |
