Black mold on ceiling corner in Dubai: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black, fuzzy spots spreading along the corner where the bedroom wall meets the ceiling. It’s the room closest to the AC unit and the smell is really musty. What's the best way to handle this properly in Dubai's humidity, and should I call a professional company or is there a DIY solution I can try first?

Black mold in a corner near the AC unit is a common issue in Dubai, primarily caused by condensation from cold air meeting the room's humid warmth. This creates a persistent damp environment where mold thrives.

For a small, surface-level area (less than one square meter), a DIY approach may suffice. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). The critical step is to eliminate the moisture source. Ensure your AC drain line is not clogged and that the unit is set to a temperature that minimizes excessive condensation. A dehumidifier in the room can also help.

However, if the mold has penetrated the porous drywall or plaster, reappears quickly after cleaning, or if the musty smell is strong, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. Stubborn recurrence indicates a hidden moisture problem within the wall or ceiling cavity, possibly from a small leak or insufficient insulation. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the source. For health safety, especially with black mold and a musty odor, lab testing can identify the species to assess potential risk. Remediation then involves containing the area, safely removing affected materials, and applying antimicrobial treatments to prevent regrowth, which is often necessary in the UAE's challenging climate.
