Found hidden black mold, what's first inpsection step?« Back to Previous Page

Our family has been dealing with constant runny noses and headaches for the last couple of months, and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled our large wardrobe away from the bedroom wall in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold hidden behind it, probably from the humidity. I'm really worried this is what's making us sick. What's the first step I should take for a proper mold inspection and should we avoid the room entirely?

The first step is to avoid disturbing the mold. Do not attempt to clean or scrub it, as this will release a massive number of spores into the air. The room should be isolated; keep the door closed and consider placing a towel at the base to contain spores. For a family experiencing symptoms, it is safest to avoid using the room until a professional assessment is complete.

In Dubai's climate, hidden mold behind furniture is common due to high humidity and condensation from air conditioning units creating cold spots on walls. A proper inspection involves more than just looking at the visible patch. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the source of the moisture and assess the full extent of growth within the wall cavity, which is often much larger than what you see.

They should also conduct air quality testing to determine the spore count in the room's air compared to the outside. This is critical to confirm the mold is the likely cause of your family's symptoms and to establish a baseline for remediation. For a case of this size with associated health effects, a professional inspection is strongly recommended over a DIY approach to ensure it is handled safely and thoroughly. The process should conclude with a detailed report outlining the cause, the extent, and the necessary steps for remediation.
