Mold around AC vent: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a damp, earthy smell, and I just found patches of black and green fuzzy stuff around the vent in my bedroom. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or a vinegar solution, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

That earthy smell and visible mold around your AC vent are classic signs of a moisture problem, very common in Dubai's high humidity. The recent spike has likely caused condensation to accumulate inside your unit or ductwork, creating the perfect environment for mold growth.
For a very small patch (under one square foot), a thorough DIY cleaning with a vinegar solution can be effective. Turn off the AC unit completely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the visible area around the vent with vinegar, which can penetrate and kill many common mold types better than bleach on porous surfaces. Let it sit before wiping clean. However, if the mold is extensive, recurring after cleaning, or you can smell it strongly when the AC runs, the visible growth is likely just the tip of the iceberg. The main colony is probably inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils themselves, which requires professional disassembly and cleaning. DIY methods cannot reach this and the problem will return. In Dubai’s climate, where AC systems run year-round, this internal contamination can significantly impact indoor air quality, potentially causing respiratory irritation and allergies. A professional assessment is strongly recommended. They use specialized tools like borescopes to inspect deep inside ducts and industrial-grade HEPA vacuants and antimicrobial treatments to address the source. Reputable companies will provide before-and-after documentation, such as lab test results, to verify the cleanup's effectiveness, which is the standard you should expect. |
