How to kill and prevent AC mold in Jumeirah Village Circle?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet for a while, and now I’m seeing these small black spots forming along the edge of the wall behind the unit. We keep the AC on most of the day, but the humidity still feels high. What’s the most effective way to kill this existing mold and prevent it from coming back without having to call maintenance for every little thing?

The black spots are likely mold caused by the AC condensate leak and JVC's high ambient humidity. First, address the leak source – this is critical. Check if the condensate drain line is clogged; it's a common issue. You can try flushing it with a mixture of warm water and vinegar. Wearing an N95 mask and gloves, scrub the visible mold on hard surfaces with a solution of detergent or a dedicated mold cleaner. For porous materials like carpet or drywall that have been consistently wet, removal and replacement is often the only permanent solution, as mold roots penetrate deeply.

To prevent recurrence, control humidity. Despite constant AC use, your unit may be oversized, cooling air quickly without running long enough to dehumidify it properly—a frequent issue here. Use a standalone hygrometer; indoor humidity should be below 60%. A dehumidifier can help significantly. Ensure furniture isn't blocking AC vents, allowing for proper air circulation.

For a persistent leak or if the mold covers more than a few square feet, a professional assessment is wise to identify any hidden growth within the wall or AC unit itself. DIY efforts often miss the root cause, leading to rapid regrowth in Dubai's climate.
