Black spots behind wardrobe: DIY bleach or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall. I'm worried it might be from a small AC leak we had fixed a few months ago. Is this something I can clean myself with a bleach solution from the supermarket, or is it time to call in a professional mold removal company?

This is a classic Dubai scenario. The wall behind the wardrobe is a cold surface from the exterior wall and AC, creating a condensation trap with zero airflow—an ideal breeding ground for mould.

A bleach solution is a temporary fix. It removes the visible stain but not the root cause, and it's ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall where mould hyphae penetrate deeply. It also doesn't address potential mould inside the wall cavity from that past leak.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt careful cleaning. Move the wardrobe, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and scrub with a dedicated mould cleaner or a diluted vinegar solution, which can be more effective than bleach on porous surfaces. Then, thoroughly dry the area and address the humidity source. Keep the wardrobe slightly away from the wall to promote airflow and consider a small desiccant dehumidifier for that room.

Given the history of a leak, the mould is likely more extensive inside the wall. If the spots are widespread, recurring after cleaning, or you notice a musty smell, professional assessment is advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness and perform remediation that includes containment and air scrubbing to prevent spores from spreading to other rooms during cleaning. A lab test can also identify the species, which is important for health concerns.
