Is urgent mold removal needed with a baby nearby?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It seems to have spread from the wall, which is on the exterior of our building in Jumeirah. I’m really worried about our health, especially with the baby sleeping in the next room. How urgent is it that we get this professionally removed, and is this something the building management should handle?

Yes, this is an urgent situation requiring professional assessment and remediation, particularly with a baby in the home. The presence of a large patch of black mold on an exterior wall indicates a persistent moisture issue, likely from a leak in the building envelope or severe condensation, both common in Dubai's humid climate.
The primary concern is that mold releases spores into the air which can be inhaled, potentially causing respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and exacerbating asthma. Infants are more vulnerable due to their developing respiratory and immune systems. You should notify your building management immediately. Under Dubai's property laws, the structural integrity of the building exterior is typically the responsibility of the Owners' Association or building management. They are obligated to address the source of the water intrusion, which is the first and most critical step. However, the actual removal of the mold growth inside your unit and any damaged materials is often the resident's responsibility. Do not attempt to remove it yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout the apartment. A professional inspection can identify the exact mold type and the full extent of the growth, which often spreads behind walls. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to clean the air, safely removing contaminated materials, and treating the area to prevent regrowth. Until a professional arrives, keep the closet door closed and the room well-ventilated. |
