How urgent is mold removal for toddler's safety?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Park villa for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the corner of the master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s been crazy humid lately and I think it’s gotten worse over the past week. My main worry is my toddler who sleeps in the next room. How urgent is it that we get this professionally treated, and is this something the landlord needs to handle immediately?

For a toddler, this requires immediate professional assessment. Mold exposure can worsen or trigger asthma and respiratory issues in young children, whose developing lungs are more vulnerable.

In Dubai's high humidity, an interior wall patch often indicates a hidden moisture source, like a leaking pipe inside the wall or condensation from the AC system. The growth worsening in a week confirms an active problem. This isn't just surface humidity; it's a building integrity issue.

Under Dubai rental law (RERA), the landlord is typically responsible for repairing structural defects that cause mold, such as leaks or inadequate insulation. You must notify them in writing immediately to start the process. However, for the health assessment and safe remediation planning, hiring an independent indoor health specialist is advised to ensure the investigation is thorough and not just a superficial fix.

Until a pro arrives, keep the closet door closed and the room well-ventilated. Do not attempt to bleach or scrub it, as this can aerosolize spores. A certified inspector can identify the exact species and moisture source, then create a containment plan to remove it safely without spreading spores through the home.
