Should I remove bedroom mold immediately for kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa. It’s a pretty big black patch that must have been growing there for a while, and we’ve had the AC running constantly. Is this something I need to call a professional to deal with immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Yes, you should address that mold immediately, especially with children's persistent coughs. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use creates ideal conditions for mold growth behind furniture where condensation builds up. A large, established patch indicates a moisture issue that needs to be resolved.

For a patch larger than one square meter, or due to its location on a structural wall and the health symptoms present, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source—often a small leak or condensation from the AC—and safely contain the area during removal to prevent spreading spores throughout your home. Do not attempt to scrub it yourself, as this can aerosolize the mold and worsen the air quality.

The persistent cough is a common reaction to mold exposure, particularly in children. While you wait for the professional, reduce your kids' exposure by keeping the bedroom door closed and the AC off in that room if possible, and run an air purifier if you have one. In Dubai, remediation companies should follow DM and DHA guidelines for containment and disposal. The key is not just cleaning the visible mold but fixing the underlying humidity or water issue to prevent it from returning.
