Should we handle black mold immediately or wait?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall behind the clothes rack and I'm worried it's been growing slowly since the humidity spiked a few months ago. My main concern is how quickly we need to act—is this something we should call a professional about immediately this weekend, or can it wait until next week?

Black mold in your closet should be addressed promptly. Given Dubai's high humidity and the fact it's been growing for months, waiting until next week is acceptable for scheduling, but don't delay further. The primary health risks are respiratory irritation and worsened allergies, which can escalate the longer the spores are present.

The immediate step is to identify and stop the moisture source. In a closet, this is often condensation from an adjacent external wall or a nearby AC unit’s condensate drain issue. Wipe the visible patch with a damp cloth and detergent to remove surface growth, but avoid bleaching as it doesn't kill the roots and can damage paint. Ensure the area is well-ventilated during cleaning.

For a patch larger than a square foot, or if it returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the wall cavity for hidden growth. In the UAE, remediation companies should follow standards like the IICRC S520 for proper containment and removal, preventing cross-contamination. A lab test isn't always necessary for visible mold but is crucial if you need to identify the species for health reasons or verify post-remediation success. Since this is in your bedroom, where you spend many hours, erring on the side of caution is wise.
