Black mold in closet: DIY or professional inspection needed?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, and it seems to be spreading. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately in Dubai, I'm worried it's getting worse. Should I just clean it with bleach myself, or is this a sign of a bigger problem that needs a professional mold inspection?

A professional inspection is strongly recommended for this situation. Visible black mold spreading on an exterior wall is rarely an isolated surface issue; it's typically a symptom of hidden moisture penetration or condensation within the wall cavity, especially during Dubai's high humidity periods.
Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and only bleaches the visible colour, leaving the root structure intact to regrow. It also fails to address the underlying moisture source. In the UAE, this is often caused by a thermal bridge where the cold AC interior meets the humid outdoor heat, creating constant condensation inside the wall. An inspection identifies the moisture source—whether it's a minor sealing issue or a significant leak—and maps the full extent of the growth, which is usually more widespread than what's visible. For a proper assessment, insist on a methodology that includes moisture mapping with a protimeter and, if necessary, air or surface sampling to be analysed by an accredited microbiology lab to determine the species. This data is crucial for deciding on the correct remediation protocol, as some molds require more stringent containment procedures than others. Addressing the root cause is the only way to prevent it from returning. |
